Group Dinners

Kate's Favorite Dish!
Indian
At the end of a long day, there is nothing that we love more than unwinding with a great dinner. By coming together for meals at the end of the day, we are able to discuss the "highs and lows" of our daily experiences. Tonight we enjoyed an amazing Indian meal at Asya, located on 46 Henry Street, Brooklyn Heights. We sampled a number of different Indian dishes, some of which included lamb vindaloo, onion bhujia, and my personal favorite, cauliflower manchurian. The meal was enjoyed under the dimly lit chandeliers of the authentically decorated Indian style restaurant. This was by far my favorite meal of the trip!

Vietnamese

After a long day in gallery hopping in Chelsea the twelve of us sat down to eat at the Chelsea Cottage for Vietnamese food. We ordered appetizers including crispy spring rolls, steamed roast pork buns, and a big crowd pleaser; crab rangoons. Some of us even sipped hot Sake for the first time.
We got most of our group discussion about the days events out of the way during the appetizers because once the steaming plates of colorful food hit the table there wasn't much talking other than the occasional "Pass whatever that is down here!" and "Are there any more napkins?"
We ate dishes like sauteed spinach and bok choy, mango shrimp, grilled vegetables, stir fry spicey pork, basil chicken, and plenty of rice.
We even had enough to take home as leftovers but even they didn't last too long.

Thai
By Kate Gott
Before coming to the city, Marc had prepared us to go to various ethnic restaurants as a group and informed us that we would be trying all sorts of new things. Tonight, after a long day together, he brought us to our first ethnic dinner in Chelsea which he had kept a surprise all day: Thai food.

Before we went into Spice, Marc made sure that our group of 12 could fit in tiny restaurant at one table. Walking in, I had no idea what to expect out of this meal, as I had never eaten Thai food. Growing up, I was not taken to many ethnic places to try new and different foods, so this was the start of my food adventure on the trip, along with many others.

Marc made it very easy for us, as he did not allow us to chose individual meals from them menu; he ordered about 8 dishes for all of us to share and try together, along with multiple appetizers and Thai iced tea made from lychee, a fruit found in South East Asia. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the amount of food that just kept coming to the table; there was no way we would eat it all...so I thought. To start, we had crab rangoon, calamari, spare ribs and some kind of rice spring roll, each with their own dipping sauce. Then to follow we had green and red curry dishes, some with chicken, a dish with beef, and some vegetarian dishes. He wanted us to try a variety of different spicy levels, some of them were pretty hot! The amount of food was unbelievable, and we ate it all.

This meal was very exciting, and I was so glad to try new things in an environment where most people were in the same position as I was. I learned a new type of food that was really tasty and had a great night out with the entire group! Our first ethnic meal out together was definitely a success, and we will all be looking forward to the rest I'm sure.

More Vietnamese

Earlier in the week, we shared a Vietnamese dinner with artist Noah Becker. I  tasted a variety of traditional Vietnamese plates. Some of these plates that I ate from included a traditional frog dish, spicy asparagus, and sua hot ga, which is a drink containing egg yolk, club soda, and condensed milk. It was enlightening to be able to experience such new and exciting dishes in the company of Noah Becker, who answered all and any questions that us students had for a successful painter. Eating frogs with Noah Becker... Who would have thought?! Definitely on of my most memorable meals in New York City!

After a day full of events from walking the Brooklyn Bridge and seeing street dancers to visiting Museums, the group finally settled down for a group dinner in China Town. Earlier in the day Marc had planned a dinner for us with Noah Becker, our first dinner with a guest.

At this point, I was pretty used to Marc picking where we eat and having us try tons of new things, but Vietnamese was something I never even imagined to try. Noah and Marc sat right in the middle of the group, and had laid back conversation throughout the dinner. It was a great experience to be able to talk to an artist in such a relaxed and stress fee environment.

I made it a point to try everything at this dinner, just to say I did. From different types of chicken, vegetables, and noodles to frog and duck. I cant say I actually enjoyed eating it all, but I am pleased to say I tried every different dish and experienced this dinner to the fullest.
